Today, Tuesday, 23 July 2024, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development welcomes the release of about (79) people in pretrial detention, in response to the demands of the National Dialogue submitted to the Attorney General and the Ministry of Interior.

It is noteworthy that on Monday, 22 July 2024, the Counselor and the Chief of Appeal, Acting First Attorney General of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, ordered the release of (79) pretrial detainees after reviewing their legal position in light of their accusations in various cases, including spreading false news and spreading rumors. This decision came in light of the discussion of the National Dialogue on the file of pretrial detention and its rules, as an essential part of the National Strategy for Human Rights.

The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development stresses that such decisions are an important step towards strengthening the National Strategy for Human Rights and enhancing trust between the government and the people during the coming period. In addition, the decision clearly indicates the extent to which the state seeks and responds to the issues raised by the national dialogue.

For his part, lawyer Saeed Abdel Hafez, coordinator of the Egyptian Coalition and President of the Forum for Development and Human Rights Dialogue, praises the decision as an important step towards a breakthrough in the file of pretrial detention. He points out that such decisions give impetus to the National Dialogue to continue to achieve political stability, as well as the need to work to solve the problem of pretrial detention and should not turn into a punishment instead of a precautionary measure.
