Today, Sunday, 11 August 2024, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development denounces, the escalation of the wave of hate speech, racism, and Islamophobia against Muslims and immigrants, in areas of Britain and Northern Ireland. It calls for more efforts to combat “Islamophobia”, and to do more in the face of such a wave of hatred, because it does not reflect cultural diversity in the country.
It is noteworthy that, since 29 July 2024, British regions have witnessed a wave of protests that included acts of vandalism against public and private facilities and violent confrontations with the police. The main reason behind these protests was a 3 young girls were stabbed to death and 10 other people were injured by a 17-year-old teenager, whose identity was not identified by the British police. This accident led to an unprecedented wave of violence in the city of Liverpool (central Britain) against Muslims and immigrants after the spread of misleading information on social media indicating that the attacker was a Muslim refugee, despite Police denial.
During these protests, dozens of far-right supporters attacked two mosques in the Southport area and the northeastern English city of Sunderland, chanting racist anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant slogans, and masked demonstrators also destroyed the facade of a hotel housing asylum-seeking migrants in Rotherham, in the south of Yorkshire, and set fire to it.
For its part, the Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development confirms that Virtual reality is the main arena for gathering and incitement, where rumors are circulated against a particular target group, especially refugees and Muslims, and anti-them feelings are exploited.
The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights calls for the necessity to:
- Provide more protection for mosques and Muslim facilities, after the expansion of far-right protests,
- Confront all hate speech and incitement by taking the necessary legal measures to address these attacks and punish their perpetrators.
The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights calls also for action against attempts to incite chaos and attacks, and undermine the peaceful coexistence.
